LANGUAGE ARTS

5th grade- We are finishing up our Literary Comparative Essays. I am so pleased with the level of work the 5th graders are capable of doing! They are doing a great job comparing an excerpt from the novel Shiloh and a short story called "Stray."

Next we will be doing a mini-unit about Literary Devices. We will cover Dialogue, Personification, Onomatopoeia, Imagery (AKA Sensory Detail), Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, and Symbolism.

We will follow that unit up with a continuation of our ongoing work on summary writing as well a grammar focus on basic sentence structure and how to avoid writing run-on sentences.

6th gradeWe are finishing up our Literary Comparative Essays. The 6th graders are thinking so deeply about the two texts we are comparing - the fantasy novel, Tuck Everlasting, and a folk tale called "The Stone." Both have elements of magic and a theme of immortality. The students are doing great work!

Next we will be doing a mini-unit about Literary Devices. We will cover Alliteration, Consonance, Assonance, Allusion, Allegory, Paradox, Irony, and Apostrophe. These are high level skills that I want to introduce to the 6th graders.

We will follow that unit up with a continuation of our ongoing work on summary writing as well a grammar focus on basic sentence structure and how to avoid writing run-on sentences.
