We are starting a new unit and focusing on the genre- Fiction!

Fiction encompasses many different types of stories- fantasy, magical, traditional, historical, mythological, or realistic. There is something for everyone! By reading and studying different types of fiction, students will develop an understanding of various forms, features, and purposes of fiction. Students will also learn and apply specific reading strategies that will enable them to visualize magical lands, infer characters’ feelings and traits, identify the author’s message, and actively engage with the texts they read.

We are beginning a unit of study using the work of Patricia Polacco- a favorite children’s nonfiction author and illustrator. We will be studying many of her books to find out the techniques she uses as a writer.  Polacco writes about friends, family relationships, interactions between older and younger people, overcoming personal challenges, and multiculturalism. Her engaging stories and beautiful illustrations make her a perfect writing teacher to learn from.

Force and Motion:  Students will discover different ways to describe position and motion. How force affects motion and how simple machines work.  Please review any worksheets and/ or vocabulary sheets that come home in their take home folder.
